Overview

Overview

Body Tracking: Becoming Audible is an interactive performance exploring how a moving body can enter into a reciprocal relationship with an electronic sound system.

Using real-time body tracking, the dancer’s position, gestures and movement qualities are translated into musical parameters. Rather than treating the body as a simple controller, the performance imagines the tracking system as a world with its own rules, limits and behaviours. Through movement, the performer gradually discovers how to exist, respond and develop within this environment.

Three Chapters

Chapter 01

Awakening

A body enters an unfamiliar sonic environment.

At first, the performer moves almost instinctively, gradually discovering that gestures and spatial positions can transform the surrounding sound. Leaving the camera’s field causes this influence to disappear, revealing the first boundary of the system.

The body begins to learn where it exists, what it can affect, and what the environment allows.

Chapter 02

Struggle

The relationship becomes faster, denser and more confrontational.

Having learned some of the system’s rules, the performer begins to push against them. Movement becomes more assertive, testing how much control can be gained and how the sonic environment responds under increasing intensity.

Chapter 03

Adaptation

The final section becomes calmer and more exploratory.

Instead of simply attempting to control the system, the performer begins to coexist with it. Movement and sound become less hierarchical, forming a shared environment in which action, reaction and uncertainty continuously reshape one another.

Body as Interface

Body as Interface

The performance uses real-time body tracking to analyse the dancer’s movement within the camera frame. Tracking data is mapped to electronic sound processes, allowing spatial position, gesture and movement to continuously reshape the composition.

The system is deliberately designed with perceptible boundaries. When the performer leaves the tracking area, the body temporarily loses its ability to affect the sound. These technical limitations become part of the dramaturgy: the dancer does not simply operate an instrument, but gradually discovers the conditions of the environment itself.

Embodied Exploration

Embodied Exploration

At the centre of the work is a simple question: how does a body learn to inhabit a system it does not yet understand?

The tracking technology becomes both instrument and environment. Its possibilities, restrictions and failures shape the performer’s behaviour, while the performer continuously reshapes the sound in return. The work uses this relationship to reflect on learning, adaptation, agency and the negotiation of boundaries.
